Pumpkin Carving and Sorting shapes

Today we drew a plan of what we wanted our Jack-o-Lanterns to look like. Then my Kindergarten friends and I cleaned it out (YUCK!). We decided to do our pumpkin with a scary face. Mrs. Stoneman and her friends made a sleepy pumpkin with earrings.

We are learning our 2D shapes. Today Remi made a square using the peg board.

Here are Abby and Jayden sorting lowercase and uppercase letters.

Making a family fun park.

So... Does it sink or does it float!?

Sorting food into it's shapes; circles, squares, rectangles, ovals, and stars.

Using tangrams to match and make pictures.

Our Beautiful artwork!
We've been learning lots about mixing colours and used our knowledge to make orange, purple and green by mixing the primary colours (blue, red, yellow).

After having bus safety training yesterday, Jadyn was inspired to use all the chairs in the classroom to make a bus.

Remi, writing about his rocketship.

The shape pumpkins we made during math centres.

Making shapes and matching them to the shapes on the wall.

Coming up...

In Language we are continuing to learn our letters, blends and sounds through Jolly Phonics.
The best thing you can do with your child at home is read to them/ with them. Watching some of our phonics videos helps too! Lots of songs you can practice singing to learn letters and sounds. (See links to the right hand side)

In Math we worked on counting 1-10 the past 2 weeks. This week we are going to start learning our 2D shapes. Lots of fun activities planned, including "I have who has", sorting shapes, and of course LOTS of new shape songs!
Click the links to listen at home with your child.

More Shapes
and even more shapes

You can practice making shapes at home using toothpicks, Popsicle stix, paper etc. Or you can give your child different materials from home and have them sort them by their shapes.
Example:

Lots going on this week:
Monday is Election Day - Don't forget to vote!
Tuesday 11:45am School Bus training, 2:30pm AIM Assembly
Thursday 9:15am Awards Assembly, 1:00pm PIZZA DAY
Friday 1:50pm Halloween Parade (Parents are welcome to come!).
*Don't forget, no swords, guns, masks etc.

Measuring and Ordering

After measuring the length of skeletons with connecting cubes at one of our math centres, the children were inspired to see how many cubes long THEY are! Once one person started doing it, they all wanted to be a part of it!

While playing with playdough, Emmah started making different sized balls. She then started ordering them from smallest to largest!
Boy our class is smart!

On Tuesday Liam saw some of his friends weighing different materials. On Friday when we asked him what he wanted to do today, he said he wanted to weigh jems.

Lots to learn

Today we were learning our letters. We're searching through the rice bin to find letters and matching them onto the sheet.
We used the light bright to make letters. We had to look at our alphabet and find the missing letters and we found our name and then used beads to try and spell our name.

We had lost of investigations going on today. Jaxon made a garage to keep his fire truck dry, Abby learned how a pumpkin becomes a Jack-O-Lantern, lots of Kindergartens learned about why things roll or slide. Liam made bowling, but quickly learned that a golf ball wouldn't work and he needed something bigger. Some friends made skates, but realized they needed elbow pads, knee pads and a helmet and made them out of paper. And lastly, some friends tried to balance the blocks.

Some friends learned about measuring weight. They tested different materials to see which was heavier. Some friends are continuing to investigate patterning/counting. Some students went fishing for numbers, they tried to catch fish in order from 0-9.

In our Halloween Math centres, students are learning to count and recognize numbers, how to measure length (How many cubes long is the skeleton), and how to graph. In addition to graphing  they are comparing items - what has less, what has more.
